GAVIN KELLY is an A.S.C. honored, Emmy Award winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Gavin’s extensive background in visual arts, music, and film, has helped him develop into a bold, dynamic, versatile filmmaker. Gavin directs films, commercials, beauty, and music videos. His feature work as a DP has premiered in many international festivals, including SUNDANCE, TORONTO, SXSW and TRIBECA.
Gavin's award-winning feature film directorial debut, CHU & BLOSSOM, is the story of an unlikely brotherhood formed between a pensive, awkward 6'7" Korean foreign exchange student and a bizarre, militant performance artist with a big heart, who are both trapped in small-town USA. Gavin co-directed with star Charles Chu, who co-wrote the script with co-star Ryan O'Nan. The film also stars Alan Cumming, Annie, Potts, Caitlin Stasey, and Academy Award Winner Mercedes Reuhl. The film was released domestically in 2015 and is currently rolling out distribution internationally.
Gavin recently wrapped shooting season 6 of the series AMERICAN HORROR STORY, for Ryan Murphy and FX.
Gavin shot the ACADEMY AWARD winning film WEST BANK STORY, a striking musical-comedy take on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The film premiered at Sundance and has won numerous international festival awards.
Gavin shot LUV, the coming-of-age dramatic thriller set on the streets of Baltimore, starring Common, Meagan Good, and Danny Glover, which premiered in competition in the Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically.
Gavin lensed the pilot A HISTORY OF RADNESS for Amazon Studios. It's a music-driven show following a brother and sister in middle school forming a rock band with fellow outsiders. Musicians Henry Rollins, James Iha (of The Smashing Pumpkins), Imagine Dragons' Dan Reynolds, and Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino are all part of the project.
Gavin's DP'd the reboot of CABIN FEVER, Eli Roth's successful first film, produced by Cassian Elwes and Evan Astrowsky. The film was released by IFC Midnight.
Gavin other recent feature releases include DIAL A PRAYER starring William H. Macy and Brittany Snow, SAFELIGHT, starring Juno Temple and Evan Peters, SEE YOU IN VALHALLA starring Sarah Hyland, and PHANTOM HALO, directed by Antonia Bogdanovich and executive produced by Peter Bogdanovich.
Gavin shot THE DRY LAND, starring Ryan O'Nan, America Ferrera, Wilmer Valderrama, Melissa Leo, and Jason Ritter. The film, following the struggles of a soldier returning from war, premiered in competition in the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.
Gavin shot the road-comedy-music film BROOKLYN BROTHERS BEAT THE BEST, starring Ryan O'Nan, Michael Weston, Arielle Kebbel, and Melissa Leo. The film premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
In 2005 Gavin received the prestigious A.S.C. Heritage Award for Outstanding Cinematography, Honorable Commendation, from the American Society of Cinematographers.
Gavin has been profiled in various publications, including International Cinematographer's Guild Magazine in the feature article "Generation Next."
While in undergraduate studies in Visual Arts at U.C.S.D., Gavin was awarded two Student Emmys for films he directed.
Gavin went on to receive an M.F.A. in film production at the U.S.C. School of Cinematic Arts in 2004.
Gavin has shot music videos for a variety of artists, including Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Matt Cardle, Haley Reinhart, Gemma Hayes, Against Me!, Emmy Rossum, and Serj Tankian (of System of a Down), Priscilla Ahn, for Warner Bros, Geffen, Interscope, Capitol, Reprise, Blue Note, and more.
Gavin has shot commercials and promos for clients including Maybelline, BMW, Avon, L'Oreal, JC Penney, Sally Hansen, Acuvue, Disney, Time Warner, Google, AOL, Walmart, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Invisible Children, as well as web series for Sony, Google, Crackle, Fox, Geek and Sundry, and more.
